Bulimia nervosa (bulimia) is an eating disorder characterized by repeated episodes of consuming large amounts of food (binge eating) followed by attempts to eliminate the calories consumed (purging). Purging may involve self-induced vomiting, use of diuretics or laxatives, or excessive exercise.
People with bulimia often have an intense fear of gaining weight and may have a distorted perception of their body size. Bulimia can lead to serious health complications, including menstrual irregularities, dental problems, cardiovascular issues, and digestive disorders.
Those most commonly affected by bulimia are teenage girls or women in their early twenties; however, men can also develop the disorder.
Possible Causes of Bulimia:
- Genetic factors
- Environmental influences, such as social pressure to be thin
- Psychological disorders, like depression and anxiety
- Experiencing bullying or abuse
- An excessive focus on weight or body image
There is no single cure for bulimia, but treatment can support recovery. It usually includes psychotherapy (such as cognitive behavioral therapy) and medication.
