What is Bulimia?

Bulimia nervosa (bulimia) is an eating disorder characterized by recurrent episodes of consuming large amounts of food (binge eating) followed by attempts to get rid of the consumed calories (purging). Purging may include self-induced vomiting, use of diuretics or laxatives, or excessive exercise.

People with bulimia have an intense fear of gaining weight and may have a distorted body image. Bulimia can lead to serious health problems, including menstrual disorders, dental issues, cardiovascular disorders, and digestive system problems.

Those most at risk of developing bulimia are teenage girls and young women in their early twenties. However, men can also develop bulimia.

There are several potential causes of bulimia, including:
• Genetic factors
• Environmental factors, such as social pressure to lose weight
• Psychological disorders, such as depression and anxiety
• Exposure to bullying or abuse
• Excessive focus on weight or body shape

There is no single cure for bulimia, but treatment can help individuals recover. Treatment usually involves psychotherapy, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy, and medications.
